When This Stretch Is Slowest: Our Own Speed Readings
Southbound, Junction 10 to Junction 9 past Bescot was one of the slowest stretches on the whole M6 in the morning during the week we measured, Monday 12 to Friday 16 October 2026. Between 06:00 and 10:00, southbound traffic averaged 25 mph, below even the 30 mph National Highways usually expects here, and at 06:00 and 07:00 (6am and 7am) the average fell to 15 and 16 mph. That added up to about 440 minutes (7.33 hours) of stop-start traffic over five mornings, in the direction of the morning commute towards Birmingham. Northbound is a different picture: speeds stayed close to normal all day, dipping only to 43 mph at 16:00 (4pm).
