What gets reported on the M6 — and what the words mean

Not everything that blocks a lane is a crash. National Highways publishes a range of incident types in its traffic data, and “accident” is only one of them. These are the categories that can appear on this page, in their own words:

Collisions

• Accident and Collision — a reported crash.
• Multi-vehicle accident — more than two vehicles involved.
• Serious accident — reported as involving serious injury or worse.

Vehicles and loads

• Broken-down vehicle — by far the most common single cause of a sudden lane closure, and one reason the M6 can be blocked with nobody hurt.
• Vehicle obstruction — a vehicle stopped where it should not be.
• Abnormal load — an oversized load moving slowly under escort.

Why a quiet page does not mean a clear road

This page shows what has been reported to us through the official feed. It is the best picture available, but it is not a complete one: incidents are sometimes reported late, cleared before they are ever logged, or never picked up at all. If nothing is showing here, it means there is nothing we are aware of — which is not quite the same as the road being clear. That is true of every traffic service, ours included, and we would rather say so.
